Zipper or buttons

Buttoned jeans - finding out whether your staff want 'buttons' or 'zips' may lead to better employee engagement

Seth Godin, talks about whether Zips or buttons are better, Here’s what he said:

Are zippers better?

For years, I always wore jeans with a zipper. After all, zippers are better. They’re faster and easier and they do what they’re told. What an amazing invention! How did we survive without zippers?

Last year, just for kicks, I bought a pair of jeans with a button fly. Middle age crisis, I guess.  Now, that’s all I wear. Buttons are better.

How can buttons be better? They’re archaic. They take a long time. They’re difficult.

Except that I like the way they look. And since I like them better, they are better.

This is a hard lesson for marketers, particularly technical marketers, to learn. You don’t get to decide what’s better. I do.

The thing is, it’s no different for employers trying to engage their employees. You don’t get to decide what engages them, what they think works best, what they like, or what they don’t like. They do.

To find out you need to talk with them. Get them involved in the process and find out together what works and what doesn’t – and if they think buttons are better than zips, then be bold and go with it.

[Tip:  What they like may not be what you would choose, but if there's no good business reason not to, go with their choice. It will be worth it.]
