The Unspoken Rules of Employee Engagement

“Treat others are you would wish to be treated!”

Now this might seem a little obvious, but honestly it’s often over looked. When you research employee engagement, the results show case studies, strategies, guidance for top level managers and lots of different ways of describing what it is. But the bottom line is, that at it’s most basic level, it’s about treating people properly.

No one wants to be ignored, kept in the dark, shouted at, spoken to rudely or worse still, ignored or dismissed as unimportant.

We all want people to:

  • speak to us nicely, with care, concern and good manners
  • tell us what is happening and keep us up to date
  • hear our ideas and thoughts
  • provide us with support and guidance where requested
  • smile
  • make us feel valued.

In a work context you could ask yourself the following questions and use the answers when dealing with your team and colleagues:

How do I want to be treated?

What would I like to know?

What do I need to know?

What do I need to feel valued?

What do I need to develop myself?

What do I need to be able to perform at my best?

And the best bit about these unspoken rules is, they won’t cost you anything to implement!
