Do you shoot yourself in the foot?

Have you ever done something that undermines your own success? Or failed to do something that would have made a huge difference to your progress – even though you knew you should do it?

At times, we unconsciously shoot ourselves in the foot when we least want to. Usually, it’s because there’s something else happening that we haven’t thought about. For example, have you done something that lost you a promotion – and afterwards said, “I didn’t want that position anyway because I would have had to relocate.” Perhaps, there’s a reason you really don’t want to move – fear of making new friends, dislike of new places. But ask yourself whether these are really good enough reasons to put barriers in your own way.

So next time you do (or don’t do) something that means you lose out on an opportunity – ask yourself whether there was something holding you back. And if so, was it really a good enough reason?
