Using cake to develop an in-house 360 feedback capability

Kim Jelph from KIJ Limited wrote a fabulously comprehensive and practical article in The 360 degree on 360 Feedback blog about her experience of developing an in-house 360 feedback system in a large public sector organisation.

360 feedback goes down better with cake at refreshment breaksWhat I love about Kim’s piece is the start to end approach. She starts right from the beginning – with the rationale for the 360 process, then follows the process: carrying through the principles, the training and the facilitated feedback.  And finally, her top tips include some valuable nuggets – including the fact that cake a fruit always go down well between sessions.

On the surface, this seems frivolous – but it’s really very smart. Food is a great comforter. People are more relaxed when they share a slice of cake or a piece of fruit. Cake and fruit provide an energy boost.  So use your refreshment breaks to help make the most out of the 360 feedback process and – let them eat cakes or fruit.

Brilliant! I’ve come across geologists recreating chalk ‘stacks’ (including old Harry and Old Harry’s wife) with sponge cake, but this is on another level.

Sponge cake chalk stacks sound superb. I’d love to see that.

I’m sure there’s scientific proof somewhere that cake is the ultimate alchemy when it comes to conversation. I can’t imagine a discussion being anything but positive with a glorious slice of cake in the mix.
