Well we are almost one month into the New Year so it’s a great time to be reviewing the goals we set as our New Year resolutions.
Was it the right goal? Do you need to refine it? Have you already refined it?
Do you need a boost to keep you on track?
What can you do to keep the energy and commitment to success high?
Here are some of our tips and tricks to keep us on track to success.
Ask yourself these questions:
• What you are trying to achieve? – Work out exactly what it is you want to achieve and why, write it down and put it somewhere you can see it and refer to it regularly.
• What are the benefits? – What will it feel like when you achieve your goal, what will be different?
• What do you need to achieve this goal? – It’s worth spending some time working out what you will need to achieve your goal and whether you already have it or need to get it from somewhere/someone. If you need to get it, where or who do you get it from?
Then do the following:
• Make the goal and outcome visible – a picture on the fridge, as your screensaver, or desktop, on the dashboard in the car, in fact anywhere and everywhere that you spend time to keep the goal in sight!
• Think about it every day – Get into a routine of thinking about your goal every day, attach it to an activity you do every day for example; think about your goal when you do the washing up each evening, when you are in the shower, during your journey to work.
• Share it with others so they can offer help and support. Give them updates on progress and don’t be afraid to ask for help on those days when things aren’t quite going to plan!
What we’ve done
Here at Engauge we haven’t only set individual career development goals but also personal goals, these are displayed alongside our organisational goals on our goals board in the office, in clear view for everyone in the office! These are very visual and designed to catch our eye, reminding us where we are trying to go and what we are trying to achieve.
This year as part of our personal goals we chose 3 headings, Visit, Learn and Support and here are some of our goals:
Visiting the following new places:
- Cape Kennedy
- The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge
- Australia
- Paradise – The Maldives?
- Scotland
- Ely
You may notice that some of these places are local to us, however sometimes it’s the things closest to home we forget about!
Learn More:
- French – This one is popular choice in the office and appears on several goal charts
- Photography – learn more and do more
- How to use and edit the results from the camcorder
- Bell Ringing.
Supporting the following charities:
- Starfish – supporting AIDS orphans in South Africa
- Mercy Ships- serving the urgent surgical needs of the forgotten poor and empowering developing communities
- Help for Heroes – support for our wounded servicemen and women injured in the current conflicts
- Teenage Cancer Trust (Cambridge) – improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.
- Jimmy’s – For those who would otherwise be forced to sleep rough
At our regular team meetings we’ll be discussing how we can help each other support these worthy causes. If you would like to help us, we’d love to hear from you.
Ask yourself – will this be the year you achieve your goal and keep your New Year’s Resolution?
